Singapore · after full-time work

The opportunity has to fit the household you actually cook for.

Shared Table is for people in Singapore who have left work, or will leave this year. A three-generation flat and a quiet two-room are not the same retirement. Start with who sits down at night. Then choose the next step.

Not a government site. Not family mediation. Check CPF, CHAS, housing schemes and any money product on official pages before you sign.

If adult children still live with you

You did not retire from the kitchen

Name the unpaid shift

Grandchildren after school, dinner for four, the laundry that “just happens” — this is work. An outside class at 5pm is not a gift if it collides with pickup. Ask for one weekday that is not family logistics. Put it on the fridge so it is visible, not negotiated every Tuesday.

Money conversations at the table

Who pays conservancy. Whether Silver Support or a CPF review is “theirs to handle”. A child who means well can still rush a flat decision. Bring the HDB letter to the table; do not let a group chat replace it. Right-sizing and Lease Buyback change everyone’s map of the home. That is why they feel sharp.

Opportunities that do not need permission

A morning walk, a CC class that ends before the school bell, a volunteer slot on the estate. These keep a name that is not only “Mama” or “Pa”. SkillsFuture credits still work; use them on something you want, not on a course chosen to impress the children.

If the table is for one or two

The risk is a clean, silent week

One standing appointment

A kopitiam, a neighbour, a library desk, a faith group — someone who would notice a missed Thursday. Active Ageing programmes are useful here as a clock, not as a slogan.

Help without giving away the keys

A child who lives in another town can hold emergency contacts without holding every login. Write who may help with Singpass and who may not. A Lasting Power of Attorney belongs in this household as much as in a crowded one.

Paid hours, if you want voices

A short shift can be company. Ask about seating and the last bus. Do not take a role that assumes you will stay late because nobody is waiting at home.

Either household

Do these regardless of how many bowls you set

  • Medicine list on paper, plus CHAS status at the clinic you actually use.
  • CPF statement in a folder you can find without asking anyone.
  • A concession card that still works on the reader.
  • One trip this month that is not a medical appointment.

The household will keep making requests. Your job is to keep one request that is yours.
